Overview
An automated external defibrillator (AED) can save someone in sudden cardiac arrest, but only if a bystander can find one quickly. Allendale had no central record of where its AEDs are. My Eagle Scout project, led in partnership with the Allendale Volunteer Ambulance Corps, addresses that gap.
What the project involves
- Town-wide survey: contacting and visiting public buildings and businesses across Allendale to find and document their AEDs
- Catalog for first responders: giving the Ambulance Corps a record of each AED's location and maintenance dates, so devices can be kept ready to use
- Map for residents: a mobile app that shows where AEDs are and walks bystanders through using one
- Community training: CPR and AED certification sessions for residents, taught by Ambulance Corps instructors
- Leading a team: recruiting and coordinating Scouts from my troop to help carry out the project
